It was hot at high noon on Wednesday, but this didn’t dampen the excitement of Howie Mandel, popular host of the US edition of the game show “Deal or No Deal” over taking a pedicab ride around the ABS-CBN compound on Wednesday.
US DOND host Howie Mandel visited ABS-CBN as part of the TV special “Deal or No Deal-Around the World”. ABS-CBN aired the Philippine Edition of DOND, titled “Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal”, from June 2006 till January 2008.
Mandel was accompanied on his pedicab ride by Kapamilya Deal Or No Deal’s 26k Girls–the girls assigned to hold the briefcases on the show–who were riding their own pedicabs.
The US DOND host could not hide his excitement while aboard the pedicab and even waved and smiled to motorists and bystanders as he was toured around the TV network’s compound.
Mandel arrived in Manila Tuesday morning to tape part of a special two-hour episode of the US edition of DOND. The TV special is taped in three countries: South Africa, Estonia and the Philippines.
‘Howie and Kris’
In the Philippine portion of the TV special, two American contestants will be shown playing the game according to the rules of the Philippine franchise produced by ABS-CBN. The briefcases, however, will contain prizes in dollars following the US version.
The two-hour special episode of DOND will air in the United States on May 7.
Mandel will tape the Philippine portion of DOND on Thursday, April 24 in one of ABS-CBN’s studios. He will be joined by actress and “Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal” host Kris Aquino as co-host
Mandel and Aquino will be joined by the georgeous 26k Girls, and Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal’s own Banker.
The TV special will also feature Mandel’s adventures during his first ever trip to Manila, as he goes around sampling local offerings, interacting with Filipinos, and shops for souvenirs.
Mandel said that he found the Philippines to be a wonderful place and is overwhelmed by the warm welcome he is receiving.
At the press launch of “Deal or No Deal Around the World” held on Tuesday, Mandel met his co-host Kris Aquino yesterday afternoon. He was also welcomed by ABS-CBN executives lead by Business Unit Head Alou Almaden and ABS-CBN Corporate Communications Manager Kane Choa.
ABS-CBN Business Unit Head Alou Almaden said: “We are honored and delighted to be part of Deal’s world tour. It’s a testament of our talent and creativity in localizing a game show that has an international following.”
“Deal or No Deal” is a gameshow produced by Endemol, a Dutch television production company. It is also the producer and owner of the TV reality show “Big Brother House” which has been franchised around the world, including in the Philippines.
According to a statement from Endemol USA Manager of Production Shannon Herlihy, the Philippines was chosen as part of the US DOND TV special because Endemol found the country’s version “awesome and fun.”
“DOND” is an Endemol format that began in the Netherlands and is now produced in over 50 countries. In the US version, contestants play and deal to win the top prize by opening 26 briefcases with prizes ranging from one US cent to $1 million.
“Kapamilya Deal Or No Deal,” which premiered in 2006 has been a big hit and a top-rater for the network. Like its US version, players have to choose among 26 briefcases held by the lovely 26k Girls, with values ranging from P1 to P3 million.
ABS-CBN will produce the special “Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal” episode that features Mandel and Aquino, under Almaden’s business unit with Bobet Vidanes as director and Morly Nueva as executive producer.
