Samar mayor appeals for help as town is in total lockdown due to new COVID-19 cases

March 14, 2021 Uncategorized

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, May 2 (PIA) — Mayor Arnel Tan of Tarangnan, Samar appealed for help from both public and private sectors as the town is in total lockdown with the additional six COVID-19 positive cases recorded in town resulting to paralyze the local government operations.

In a PIA Virtual Kapihan on Friday hosted by PIA-8 Regional Director Erlinda Olivia Tiu, Tan appealed for help from all sectors to augment the needed support for his constituents saying that they are now facing hardship due to limited movement.

“Medyo mahirap yung sitwasyon namin ngayon dito kasi kasama yung mga  personnel namin na na-swab at karamihan sa kanila ay mga rescue volunteer, so paralisado ang buong sistema ng munisipyo namin ngayon,” Tan said.

Tan added that with the shortage of manpower and food supplies, he is asking for help from the government, private sectors as well as from private individuals.

“Kailangan namin dito ng tubig, pagkain at mga gamot. Kung sana makakapagbigay yung mga nakakataas na opisyal ng gobyerno mas maganda po kasi hindi na talaga kaya ng bayan namin ngayon ang sitwasyon dito,” Tan said.

Aside from problems on water supply, food, medicines and other basic necessities, the operation of the municipality is affected as many vital workers particularly those in the health and rescue services who had close contact with the health workers are under quarantine.

With the current situation, the local chief executive, who is also in quarantine with his wife said that he is doing everything that he can do for his people.

Since March this year, Tarangnan LGU has started the procurement and distribution relief goods for some 6,900 families taken from last year’s savings of the town’s quick response fund and calamity fund.

The provincial government of Samar through Governor Michael Tan distributed also 12 kilos of rice and food packs for each family.

As the government imposed the general community quarantine, Mayor Tan also asked for a little consideration and support from local officials and residents in nearby towns and cities that delivery of basic and health services in Tarangnan will be unhampered particularly ambulances carrying pregnant women and other individuals seeking immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, Mayor Tan welcomes all donations for his people but he prefers donations in kind.

“Mas prefer namin ngayon ang goods kaysa cash kasi kapag galing sa Tarangnan ang pera, yung ibang suppliers ayaw tanggapin. Kaya mas maganda kung goods sana ang maibibigay kasi mabilis naming madi-distribute sa mga tao,” Tan said.

Currently, the Eastern Visayas region has recorded a total of 13 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 (with zero death), nine of them are from Taranganan, one from Calbayog City, two from Burauen in Leyte and one from Catarman in Northern Samar. (ldl/cba/PIA)
