Prov’l gov’t organizes Oriental Mindoro Information Society
CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, June 12 (PIA) – The provincial government of Oriental Mindoro, through its Public Information Services Division (PISD) has created an organization called Oriental Mindoro Information Society (OMIS) last May 22.
PISD is now headed by Provincial Administrator Dr. Hubbert Christopher A. Dolor.
The main objective of the organization is to develop collaboration, partnership and constant sharing of right information of among designated Information Officers of local governments and national government agencies in the province.
Thus, in order to synchronize the acts of fighting fake news,Dolor called a meeting yesterday with all designated Information Officers of all national government agencies based in Oriental Mindoro to converge with the LGUs and ‘act as one’.
Dolor said there were many cases in the past where people were misinformed, as he recognizesthe power of social media. He gave as example the news that was shared regarding the alleged number of COVID-19 positive cases in Puerto Galera that caused unnecessary alarm and panic among the communities in the area. He also said the exaggerated issues on the distribution of Social Amelioration Program (SAP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), has put to bad light, not only the DSWD but the LGUs as well.
As an administrator and at the same time head of the PISD, Dolor said his office is often besieged by several challenges, including the proliferation of fake news.
Hence, Dolor assured that creation of OMIS will help the provincial government combat fake news by means of proper dissemination of information by government Information Officers so that people will know the truth.
“How are we going to perform our work? This is probably the right time for all of us. The provincial government is leading the way. We hope you don’t mind bothering you this time because we want you to at least tell you what we are doing as Information Officers,” said Dolor.
He added, “there are people who would feel satisfied if they could ruin the lives of individuals through spreading fake news but, let us not allow them to succeed.
As part of the newly-created OMIS, Dolor encouraged all participants to share with the provincial government all government programs that they are implementing.
“We have various media platforms in disseminating information. We have a complete staff from the PISD to do the job. We have the latest ‘Ugnayan sa Mamayan’ where yours truly is hosting it and we also look for agencies that would like to host the program so that information will be properly disseminated. This platform can be monitored by people in local cable televisions in the whole province of Oriental Mindoro,” Dolor added.
The newly created OMIS is basically a group of Information Officers who collectively work together to achieve common goal which is to fight the proliferation of fake news in order that people may live in a new normal way of life in the entire province of Oriental Mindoro, especially at this time of COVID-19 pandemic.
