Govt launches website to debunk fake news amid pandemic, disasters
CALOOCAN CITY, July 21 (PIA) — The government on Monday launched a website to help stop fake news from spreading by providing timely, accurate, and reliable information related to disasters that may severely affect the country, such as the coronavirus pandemic.
The new Laging Handa (Always Prepared) Unified Website, in its beta version, harmonizes all information from reliable and trusted sources and gives the general public easier access to the information.
The website is powered by the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), through its attached bureau, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), in cooperation with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and partner developer Dashboard Philippines.
“The Laging Handa Unified Website will provide accurate information in the time of COVID-19. This will fight fake news and disinformation that only foster panic in people,” PIA Director-General Ramon L. Cualoping III said in a report by the Philippine News Agency.
The website can be accessed via laginghanda.gov.ph, wehealasone.gov.ph, or covid19.gov.ph.
Cualoping emphasized the importance of having a unified message and a streamlined communication platform such as Laging Handa that may be referenced to debunk rumors and hoaxes about COVID-19.
“This is in line with our mandate as government communicators. We will Explain, Explain, Explain, until we kill the virus called fake news,” he said.
The website contains frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding COVID-19.
One cool feature of the site is its “dark mode” or the light-on-dark color scheme that uses light-colored text, icons, and graphical user interface elements on a dark background.
It also features government resolutions, issuances, memorandum, and guidelines that are conveniently placed for easy access.
Moreover, it contains news, presidential briefings, and links to Laging Handa briefings, among others. (PIA NCR)
