Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month celebration kicks off in QC

DA Officials with food security ambassador James Reid led the opening event of the Farmer’s and Fisherfolk’s Month in at the DA Central Office in Quezon City.

QUEZON CITY, May 27 (PIA) –Farmer’s and Fisherfolk’s Month celebration kickoff event was held Monday, May 25 at the Department of Agriculture (DA) Central Office in Quezon City,

Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar and officials led the opening of the celebration by launching its Plant, Plant Plant program.

Joining the Secretary were Mr. James Reid, newly-designated DA Ambassador on Food Security, and young agripreneurs, Jeffrey Oh and Fiona Faulkner.

       Agriculture Secretary William Dar hands over a plaque of aprreciation to celebrity James Reid as the newly designated food security ambassador. 

As food security ambassador, Reid commits to inform the public on the main advocacies of the Department specifically its campaign on ensuring sustained food security, food accessibility and affordability; and encourage the youth and other advocates on the important roles of farmers and fishers, their hard work, and their valuable contributions to the country.

Dar, in his message emphasized the important role of agriculture in the Covid-19 recovery efforts of the government. “For us to rise stronger from this Covid-19 crisis, the government must encourage the development of an agriculture-driven economy,” said Dar.

 “We believe that economic growth in agriculture is more effective at reducing poverty and food insecurity than growth in other sectors. Investments in agriculture can help revive food production and create jobs, following a crisis, and enable rural communities to recover,” he said. (DA/PIA-NCR)
