Duterte vows support for coconut industry
MISAMIS ORIENTAL, July 29 (PIA) – In his penultimate State of the Nation Address on Monday, July 27, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has underscored the need to utilize the “coco levy fund” to support the coconut farmers and to rehabilitate the coconut industry in the country.
The Philippines is the world’s second largest producer of coconut products after Indonesia with Northern Mindanao contributing to 13.6 percent of the production from January to March of this year.
Coconut farmers can expect the full support of the government in the last two years of President Duterte, as he vows to prioritize the rehabiltiation of the coconut industry.
Although the coconut production fell by 5.1 percent this quarter by 5.1 percent from 3.31 million metric tons in the same period of 2019 to its current level of 3.14 million metric tons due in part to the disruption caused by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the administration remains hopeful that the industry will bounce back, as it would give the coconut farmers the needed assistance and support.
The President has also urged Congress to pass the bill protecting the Trust Fund of the coconut farmers to insulate it from “corruption” which has been a zeitgeist haunting the coco levy fund since the 70’s. (VPSBautista/PIA10)
