DOST NegOr accepts applications for undergrad scholarships
NEGROS ORIENTAL, July 16 (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) here is now accepting applications for its Undergraduate Scholarship Programs in Republic Act No. 7687 and Merit amid COVID-19 pandemic.
Scholarships are open to all graduating senior high school students who are enrolled in public and private schools in Negros Oriental.
DOST Provincial Director Gilbert Arbon has called on Grade 12 students taking up Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) strand to apply for the scholarship.
However, non-STEM strand students must belong to the top five percent of their class to be eligible to apply.
Arbon said to be able to enjoy the scholarship, applicants should pass the 2021 S&T Undergraduate Scholarships Examination and pursue a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program in any of the priority fields of study at a state university or college or any private higher education institution.
But the college institutions must be recognized by the Commission on Higher Education as center of excellence or center of development or with at least FAAP Level III accreditation for the BS program that they intend to enroll in, added Arbon.
Under the program, exam passers will enjoy P40,000 subsidy for tuition and school fees, receive P10,000 book allowance per academic year, and P7,000 monthly living allowance for the academic year, among other benefits.
RA 7687, or Science and Technology Act of 1994, provides for scholarships for talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status does not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators.
Qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching.
Merit program, on the other hand, is awarded to non-poor students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.
