DA purchases tons of assorted crops directly from Ifugao farmers
ASIPULO, Ifugao, July 10 (PIA) – – More than 100 tons of agricultural crops from the municipalities of Asipulo and Tinoc were purchased by the Department of Agriculture in the Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) in separate occasions recently.-
The DA-CAR through the Agri-business Marketing Assistance Division bought directly from the farmers a total of 110 tons of assorted vegetables consisting of tomatoes, carrots, pepper and other products with an estimated total sales of about Php1.8 million.
Charlemagne Monayao, agricultural provincial coordinating officer of DA-CAR, said the purchase of agricultural crops directly from farmers is among the strategies employed by the agency to assist farmers affected by the low price caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is to help them market their products and to show that the government is doing its part in promoting their general welfare contrary to some allegations that they were left behind that led to the dumping of tomatoes,” Monayao said.
He encouraged the farmers to practice agriculture programming by planting other alternative crops and not only tomatoes at the same time as prices are dictated by the law of supply and demand.
Farmers Nelson Habawil and Rita Alindayo of Ballukuk, Liwon, Asipulo thanked the DA-CAR for purchasing their produce and they expressed hope that this assistance will be sustained especially during this community quarantine wherein transportation and movements are still limited.
Habawil, Ballukuk Farmers’ Orgnization president, disclosed that they did not rely much on government’s assistance in the past, however, with the current situation they really need interventions from the government. He also requested that the farm to market roads in the areas where their gardens are located be given attention to ease hauling and transport of their of crops.
The purchases were made possible through the collaborative efforts of DA-CAR and the provincial and municipal agriculture offices in partnership with the farmers’ organizations of the two municipalities. (JDP/MBL- PIA CAR, Ifugao)
