DA CALABARZON distributes 7,400 chickens to Rizal ASF-affected backyard raisers
CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, June 26 (PIA)–The Department of Agriculture Region IV-CALABARZON as part of its recovery and rehabilitation program for (ASF)-affected raisers in the Region distributed about 7,400 chickens to Rizal backyard raisers.
About 370 backyard raisers in the town of Rodriguez who lost their livelihood due to ASF were awarded each with 20 free-range chickens June 25, 2020 at the Municipal Nursery in Brgy. Macabud.
Aside from the chickens, the farmer-beneficiaries were also provided with feeds, nets, cages, crates, and garden tools.
(The assistance like chicks, feeds and others that the DA gave is a big help for us, farmers now that we are experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic. A good livelihood for us in going forward in our everday lives.)
Regional Director Arnel V. de Mesa assured the farmers that the support of the DA CALABARZON will not falter and will continue in order to realize the vision of Secretary William D. Dar of a bountiful harvest and prosperous income for the farmers and fisherfolk.
(We only request that you enrich the assistance provided by the DA. The Municipal Agriculturist Office and the DA CALABARZON are there to give free technical assistance to ensure the interventions are earning livelihood.)
In addition to the interventions, Dr. Jerome G. Quasay of the Livestock Program held a basic orientation for the farmer-beneficiaries on the proper rearing of free-range chicken. The beneficiaries were also furnished with reading materials on proper care of poultry.
Significantly, the chickens are layers and can produce brown eggs which command a very good price compared to white eggs. (PIA-4A/RFL, DA-IVA, RAFIS)
